9 Money Saving Food Shopping Tips

1. Make a list when going food shopping and stick to it! Anything that is not on the list is not a “need”, but merely a “want” so avoid emptying your purse/bank card for unnecessary items.

2. Buy non-perishable consumables in bulk to benefit from bulk discounts.
3. Use vouchers when available. Take the time and have the patience to clip and organise grocery vouchers. When added together, savings from using all vouchers in one grocery trip can be as much as £10. Purchase restaurant and shopping vouchers online and print them at home. Doing so can save you a lot of money.
4. Buy online, whenever possible. Online stores pass their savings from rental costs and warehousing to the online consumer, thus they can afford as much as 70% off their shelf price. When buying items online, Google it first together with the word, “discount code”. This can give you further reductions on the item you want to purchase. Try also online bidding (e.g. ebay, ebid, Cast Off etc): they offer very big discounts off the original purchase price, for practically new (slightly used!) items.
5. Take lunch to work. Buy crisps and drink when doing your food shopping, and make a homemade sandwich. Did you make a lot of dinner the evening before? Take some into work for your lunch - most places of work have a microwave.
6. Eat homemade dinners as often as possible. Plan menus that are practical and easy-to-cook to encourage eating at home. Save money by dining out only on special occasions.
7. Use everyday food items for skin and body care. Cucumbers, honey, milk, lemon, salt and baking soda are some items in your home that can also be used to take care of your skin.
8. Avoid shopping to de-stress. Try walking around the park or watching a movie instead.
9. Bring your own drinks and snacks when watching a film at a cinema. The cost of drinks and snacks are high in cinemas. Just don't make it too obvious when you walk in!

I did a small food shop today at Asda and came across a few special offers.

Don Simon orange juice (750ml), with and without juicy bits is currently on offer for only 50p - previously £1.00. This Spanish orange juice is delicious and moreish. Crazy me only picked up one!! I'll be back at my local Asda tomorrow to stock up.

Asda Bigpot yoghurt (450ml) is currently only 50p, down from 95p.

Take Baby Steps for Successful 2011 Resolutions

Hello, and a Happy New Year to everyone.
I hope the New Year has started well for you, and may it continue. If you made resolutions, how are they coming along? If you haven't started them yet never mind, just tell yourself that you will start them in January. That's two more weeks of January to get started. The habit you want to change won't disappear overnight - this habit has been with you for a while, so don't beat up on yourself if trying to change isn't going to plan. With baby steps you will achieve your goal.

One of my resolutions is to get rid of, once and for all, this excess weight that has attached itself to me, since having my last child (just under three years ago!) I must say, I've done little in that time to get rid of it - baby raising has been the priority with little time to even consider fitting in an exercise routine. But now enough is enough. As someone who once had a life that consisted of going to the gym three or four times a week (before becoming pregnant with my first child, just over five years ago), I know how taking that first baby step towards shedding the weight can start off a wonderful dominoe effect of wanting to exercise, healthy eating, increased energy and lots of other great benefits.
If you are one of the many, including myself, who vow to lose weight and keep fit, visualise yourself with the body figure you want to have, even sticking a photo on the wall of yourself when you were slimmer, leaner or more muscular, and start the first baby step to a new you.

How to Halve Your Weekly Food Bill - Part 1

I am sure that you already know that simple changes can actually halve your weekly food bill - but where do you start?

It may seem a chore at first, and may seem as though it is extending your shopping time, but never fear, with patience and diligence, selective shopping, will soon come as second nature to you.

Milk
Buying in bulk is a great way to save. One pint of milk can cost 45p, while a six pinter is £2.25. If you have enough room in your fridge, buy the larger size. You will find a hundred and one uses of milk in the kitchen, it will not go to waste. Most milk has a good shelf life and did you know - you can actually freeze milk!

Low-fat Spread
Many of us use spreads rather than butter.
My mother loves butter, as that is what she was brought up on in the 60's.
There was Stork Margarine, Echo Margarine or Butter, that wasit, they where the only choice in those days. There is so much choice now and it can be rather confusing, and prices can vary enormously.

A 500g of Flora Light is £1.40, compared to a huge £3.80 for Flora Proactiv.
It is definitely worth taking the time to find the most healthy spread for you and your family at a reasonable price.

The need to be frugal is more relevant than ever. With job losses and the coalition government cutting spending in all areas, no one is immune. Since my last blog post, I have found myself out of work. Money-saving, cost-cutting, being frugal etc is more a part of my life now than ever before, and that's saying something. Before, I was money-saving but now I am desperately money-saving. I am good with budgeting my money (goes back to my university days), and since having my two young children I barely buy myself luxuries. Well now, I have to think about whether I really need that neccessity now 'or can it wait for another day'.

10 Money Saving Wedding Tips

Weddings aren't cheap, but they don't have to put a huge dent in your bank account and have you paying back loans for months to come. Here are a few moneysaving wedding tips to consider.

Find a wedding venue that will allow you to provide your own catering. You'll save £100's. You could ask a local college for affordable catering staff to be waiters etc.
Consider hiring wedding attire (for the bride couple, best man etc) instead of buying and having e.g a dress specially made.
Have a buffet instead of a sit down meal.
Have wedding bubbles instead of confetti. They're cheaper and will look pretty in pictures.
How about flower petals and candles on tables in the reception, instead of expensive flower arrangements.
Have a small intimate wedding. Cut down on your guest list. Have the guests you want. How about: inviting representatives from families (e.g not every adult cousin of your aunts and uncles); inviting family and friends who you've been in contact with in the past 12 months; not inviting everyone's girlfriend and boyfriend. Yes, this might upset some people but who's paying for the wedding! We're living in expensive times where people are trying to save money. Just explain (if you need to) that you and your husband/wife to be have got a very limited budget but that you didn't want that to stop you getting married.
Consider a morning or an afternoon wedding reception. A breakfast or brunch would be less expensive than dinner. Plus people would tend to drink less alcohol early in the afternoon than in the evening.
Keep beverage costs down by serving an alcoholic punch and a non-alcoholic punch.
If you choose to have an open bar, limit the cocktail hour then serve only wine (or punch) after that hour.
Make your own wedding favours:

e.g fill small favour boxes or organza bags with mint imperials or other sweets
place a personalised chocolate on each place setting
have a bowl of sweets in the centre of the table
buy a lottery ticket for each adult place setting
have a medium sized organza bag with a few toys, colouring book and crayons/felt tips to occupy the children.

The Real Secret To Building A High-Profit Internet Business

My wife laughs every time she sees me doing it
At least once or twice every week, I'll be at my desk (or at the dining room table) with my Franklin Covey planner open and a stack of laminated checklists in hand.
"What are you doing, honey?" she calls, already knowing the answer.
"I'm planning", I reply with a smile.
She laughs and I get back to work.
She laughs because she swears I spend half of my time "planning". But, if you ask me how I'm able to get as much work done as I do in only 3 hours a day, I'll point to a black Franklin Covey planner with about a dozen laminated checklists inside.

Building an Internet business is easy. Seriously. I'm not saying that it's not complicated, because it is. I'm just saying that it's easy to accomplish if you just have a system in place.
There's very little in this world that can't be accomplished with the right set of action steps in front of you.
Today, I'm going to give you such a system for building your Internet business. There are only 4 steps...

1. Decide What You Want To Do. Do you want to run an eBay(R) business? Be an affiliate marketer? Buy and sell reprint rights? Get involved in niche marketing? While all of those things will likely find their way into your plan in time, you gotta begin with one thing at a time.
My recommendation: Choose a "broad" topic you are interested in and begin building a list of folks interested in that topic.

2. Determine A Weekly Action Plan. After you decide what you want to do, it's time to determine how to get it done. What I do is this: I create a weekly set of action steps. That is, I have a set of things I do on Monday, on Tuesday, and so forth. Decide how many hours (as little as ONE) you want to work each day and schedule yourself a reasonable amount of things to get done in that time frame. Repeat this process week after week.
My recommendation: Begin writing ezine articles to promote your list ... and affiliate programs. It's the easiest way to get free traffic and build your list at the same time.

3. Devote Yourself To Staying On Schedule. The important thing here is to stick to it. The easiest way that I know of to make certain you develop discipline in your schedule is to NOT set unrealistic expectations. Give yourself ample time to do each day's action step - don't overschedule. Look for progress along the way to celebrate. Reward yourself when you've reached a milestone. And, remember, you're GROWING a business. Just like physical growth, it takes time ... it WILL happen if you remain committed.
My recommendation: Weave in simple activities related to the following categories - List building (ezine articles), product creation(conduct interviews or hire ghostwriters), site development (making your site convert more visitors into buyers),and education (continuing to learn new ways to grow your business).

4. Develop Additional Shortcuts. As you get better and better at working with your lists, creating products and tweaking your site, you'll want to continue to improve your business with new ideas, strategies, tools, and resources. The key is simple: never stop learning!
My recommendation: Visit forums. Read articles. Download reports. Identify sites and resources that CONTRIBUTE to your success in educating you. You want faster results, bigger increases, automated processes, and other ways to get more accomplished and more profit, with less work involved.
Everything depends on your developing a plan and sticking to it.
And that is the REAL secret to building a high-profit Internet business!

The Wii has been one of the most popular selling toys since it was first introduced a few years ago… Every holiday season, stores have put limitations on the number a customer can purchase. I don’t expect it to be quite as hot this year… but, there are still lessons we can learn from the rage it has brought to eBay. Previous years, the Wii has end up on eBay selling for TWICE the retail price because of the limited availability in stores (usually the case for why new toys sell so well on eBay during the holidays)… But, one thing I’ve noticed is that the auctions that tend to sky rocket – are the ones that differentiate themselves from the competition. This is usually accomplished by bundling the wii with other popular wii products to create a unique lot for sale on eBay.

There is a lesson to be learned here…

If you want to stand out from the competition, you have to do something different! This is common sense – but, you’ll be surprised how many sellers overlook this simple strategy.

Look at the most popular toys this year and get creative when you consider how you are going to list. Here are some ideas to get you thinking – lessons learned from the wii:

Shopping for food online has transformed my life! I wish I'd discovered it earlier. Like a lot of people, I had heard about it but hadn't tried it out. With no car (I can drive but I haven't passed my test) and two young children, I had to do something to make for a stress-less shopping experience.

Benefits of Online Food Shopping
1. With no car you don't have to battle with shopping bags on a packed bus

2. With no car you don't have to battle with shopping bags, a one year old in a pushchair and a three year old child who has a mind of her own, and who may suddenly choose to display terrible-threes behaviour.

3.You won't buy out all the food on the reduced shelves - food that you don't usually buy / that you'll end up throwing away because the use buy date was too soon for you to eat it in (hence why it's reduced)

4. You can see the cost of the total items you put in the trolley, instead of having it tilled up by the cashier and trying to play it cool when she shocks you with the total of your shop. Online, you can remove an item if your shopping is going over your budget.

The NEXT Sale

Yes I know it's only September. I used to think people who shopped months in advance for christmas presents were 'a bit odd' and eager for christmas. 'What's the rush - there's months yet' I used to say. Well that was before I had children.

During the christmas season I've got christmas presents to think about, as well as children's parties, children's birthdays, a works do and buying something to wear for that and any other functions that can crop up around this time. Since pay day is usually earlier in December that means my pay that month has to stretch for an extra week. It makes sense then to shop a few or at least two months in advance.

There might be a sale on, a special offer or you see something that you know a particular person that you intend to buy for would like. Just buy the item there and then instead of pondering whether you should buy it. It might not be there next time you go back to the shop. Or the special offer might have ended. How gutting would that be!

Also, if you take your time shopping from now, you'll have a relatively stress free run up to christmas, while others are frantically and frustratingly running from shop to shop trying to find presents.

Ten Tips for Reading With Children

Education and parenting experts agree that reading to and with young children helps them better understand their world and develop important language and learning skills. Most importantly, when parents and children read together, children develop a love of reading that can last a lifetime.
But how can busy parents and caregivers maximize the value of reading time with their children, and make the experience more fun, productive and rewarding for themselves as well as for their children?
1. Start reading together as early as possible.
Even tiny babies love to hear the rhythms and intonations of a loved one's voice (poetry and rhyming text is great!) and to look at colorful, eye-catching artwork. Get kids used to the idea of looking at and listening to books as early as possible.

2. Cuddle while reading together.
This is a powerful kinesthetic way to help children subconsciously associate reading with warmth, joy and love, and helps seed the ground for passionate readers later in life. Plus, it makes for great parent/child bonding time.

3. Trace the lines with a finger while reading aloud.
With young children who are just learning to read, this helps them to follow along and associate the letters and words with the sounds they are hearing and images they are seeing, encouraging them to learn to read themselves.

4. Use character voices or accents.
Children love to hear the voices of individual characters come to life, and this can really help activate the story and characters for them and engage their imaginations.

5. Read with vocal "colour."
This is probably the most important tip of all. Keeping the voice alive and interesting can make all the difference in terms of a child's ability to listen and follow a story. Use emphasis here, enthusiasm there, tenderness another place.
Find the cadences and rhythms of the author's language, and try to convey the mood or the characters' intentions.
There's no need to be a ham, or yuck it up so much that the listener pays more attention to the vocal acrobatics than the story itself, but it's important to avoid monotonous reading. Keep it fresh!

6. Stop from time to time to ask questions.
Check in with young listeners about their thoughts and reactions to the story or pictures - "Why do you think he or she did that?" "What would you do in that situation?" "What do you think is going to happen?" "Do you see what I see?"

7. Personalize the story.
Look for ways to insert the child's name into the text, especially if it's a book that speaks directly to a child and only uses pronouns, or to substitute the name of a character or place with a familiar one. Draw parallels between the events and characters in the story and those of your child's life.

8. Role-play with dialogue.
If a child is old enough to read, divide the character roles and alternate reading the dialogue together. This is a great way to draw a child into the story, and to help them learn to read aloud with animation.

9. Fuel a child's individual passions and interests -
Does he or she love animals? Sports? Cooking? Dressing up? Find books that speak to their unique interests, and be willing to read the same books a hundred times in a row. In this way we can affirm for our children the value of having one's own passions and perspective.

10. It doesn't have to be books! If there's nothing else at hand, a magazine can make for fun reading as well. See what child-friendly "stories" can be found inside or even made up from the pictures. The important thing is to spend time sitting with kids, turning pages and exploring and discovering together.BONUS TIP:Create home-made "AudioBooks." Read and record a favorite stories on tape or CD that a child can play back and follow along with in the book. These can be wonderful gifts - and can be especially helpful as a transition to sleep, or when a loved one has to be away for any period of time.

The following are my favorite frugal tips that I use on a regular basis. I hope that they will help you as much as they have helped me and my family.

• Keep a positive attitude.
When you succeed at saving money you are helping yourself. Pat yourself on the back for meeting your goals. Remember that just because you have determined to live by a budget, does not mean that you are "cheap".

• Be content with what you have.
Remember that you have so much more than most people in this world. Do not view budgeting as doing without; but as being an intelligent consumer, and consistent manager of your money.

• "Stretch" everything as much as you possibly can.
For example, you can dilute these products with water, or cut them in half and they will work just as well: toothpaste, shampoo, hair conditioner, dish detergent, dishwasher soap, and laundry soap.

• Drink lots of water.
It is better for you, and much easier on your pocketbook. At home, the cheapest of course, is your tap water. However, if you do not like tap water or desire filtered water, you can still save money on bottled water by using these tips: Buy the store brand - do not pay extra for name brands. When your bottles are empty, look for the bottled water machines at your grocery store. In my area, I can fill a gallon for only .25 cents. Compare that to .75 cents (or more) per gallon that you are paying in the store. Stock up on small bottles when they are on sale, and reuse them for lunches. At work and when dining out, always order water. It is usually free. If you take a bag lunch, take along a bottle of water or a thermos.

• Always stockpile sale items whenever your budget allows for it.
This is a huge money saver, and my all-time favorite tip. Stockpiling means buying enough of the item while it is on sale to last you until the next sale. Spend as much of your budgeted money as you possibly can on sale items. "Loss Leaders" are the low-priced sale items that the grocery stores advertise to get you into their stores. They are hoping that as you stop by for the sale items, that you will do all of your shopping in their store. Don't. Get the sale items and leave. Shop around. Compare prices. No one store ever has the lowest prices on everything.

• Never pay retail prices unless absolutely necessary.
Use coupons, send for rebates, and shop the sales. If you use the previous tip, you will always have on hand the things you need. You will not have to make special trips to purchase items at full price. Don't be caught by surprise - plan ahead. You will feel more secure knowing that you have a full pantry as well.

• Make it yourself.
Make what you need instead of buying it. My favorite thing to make is Laundry Soap. Click here for my recipes.There are many things that I make instead of buying. One is Pickle Relish. Instead of paying $1.29 for a 10 oz. jar of pickle relish at the store, I buy the 46 oz. jar of whole pickles on sale for $1.50-$2.00. Then I chop the pickles in my blender or food processor. I save $3.00-$4.00 by doing this. I refuse to buy processed cheese slices. I buy store brand bricks of cheese on sale. The typical price is $1.20 for an 8 ounce brick. Then I process the cheese in the blender/food processor and add a little mayonnaise. This makes a great cheese spread that you can put on sandwiches, and it is much cheaper!

• Shop the discounted bread stores.
Did you know that most of the time the bread stores carry fresh breads? You can get baked goods for a much lower price. Most bread stores also offer promotions such as "frequent buyer cards". Our local bread store gives discount cards. For each $5.00 purchase, they will stamp the card one time. When your card has 7 stamps, you turn in the card and receive a free $5.00 credit. Notice I said, NEED it - not WANT it. There is a big difference. Curb your desires, and learn to discipline your spending habits. Trust me, it can be done.

• Before you buy something, ask yourself the following questions:
Is this something I can live without?Do I already have something that I can use instead?Can I borrow it from a friend or family member?How long will I have to work to pay for this? Do I really need this, or do I only want it?

• Always use the Five R's: Repair, Restore, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - these alone will save you a bundle. If you will incorporate these tips into your daily life, you will save money - guaranteed. -
